The Material Imagination of Ian Boyden
I am delighted to announce that I will have an exhibition at the Suzhou Museum from July 1 through July 31. This is a gorgeous museum designed by I.M. Pei. The exhibition is titled Flowing Movement—The Material Imagination of Ian Boyden and will occupy the three rooms of the contemporary wing of the museum. Reflecting the archtiectural layout of the museum, the exhibition is divided into three parts—paintings, books, and video. The exhibition features an array of work, some of which I brought from the US as well as some made this year in China. In addition to several new paintings, I am particularly excited to debut a new meteorite book titled Sidereal Heart, a long accordion book made in collaboration with Sam Hamill titled Edible Earth, as well as a rather raucus video installation titled Immortal Feast. I will provide links to these recent projects on my site over the next few days and weeks. So stay tuned!
The exhibition is being curated by art historian Bai Qianshen and is accompanied by a 200 page bilingual catalogue published by the Shanghai Cultural Press in conjuction with the Suzhou Museum and J.Y. Fine Art. The catalogue includes essays by Bai Qianshen, Richard Barnhart, and Timothy C. Ely as well as a long interview and various other statements by me regarding my work. The image to the left is the cover of the catalogue.

The opening reception is on July 6. Come if you can!
